How to Find a Private Number Plate

Choosing a private number plate is the perfect way to transform your vehicle into a unique expression. And whether you want to add your initials, incorporate a meaningful date or word, or invest in a cherished plate, there are plenty of options to explore.

In this guide, we’ll show you exactly how to find your dream private number plate on SwiftReg.

We’ll go through the types of plates available, how to think of ideas, and how to use and navigate our search pages.

The Types of Number Plates

There are plenty of number plates to choose from at all price points. Each type has unique characteristics.

Dateless Number Plates

Dateless number plates are the most exclusive options, with no age identifier. They typically feature 1-3 letters, followed by 1-4 numbers,  or vice versa.

When you purchase a dateless licence plate, you can transfer it to any vehicle, regardless of age. Examples include “A 1” and “18 PJ”.

Suffix Number Plates

Suffix number plates were issued between 1963 and 1982. They feature three letters, followed by up to three numbers, and end with a number indicating the registration year.

For example, cars with an A at the end were registered in 1963.

Prefix Number Plates

When combinations for suffix number plates ran out, the DVLA introduced prefix number plates.

These plates were issued between 1983 and 2001, featuring a year letter followed by a three-letter combination (e.g A123 BCD).

Current Style Number Plates

Current style number plates began in September 2001. The first two letters indicate the region, and the two numbers serve as age identifiers. The following three letters are random.

Northern Ireland Number Plates

While Northern Ireland number plates were created for registrations in the country, they’re transferable to any vehicle in the UK. They use a format of three letters, followed by up to four numbers.

What makes these license plates incredibly desirable is that they don’t have any age identifiers.
