What Happens After You Buy A Private Number Plate?
Buying a private number plate is the fun part. You’ve searched for different combos, found something you love, made your offer, and secured it. But a lot of buyers soon realise that there’s more to do after finally getting their personalised plates.
What happens next? Do you have to fill in paperwork? How do you put the plate on your car?
You don’t need to worry about any of that, because we’ve got everything you need to know right here.
So, let’s walk through what happens after you buy a private registration plate.
You’ll Get an Order Confirmation and the Appropriate DVLA Documentation
Once you finish the checkout process, you’ll receive an email from Swiftreg confirming your order.
What happens after this depends on the registration you’ve purchased and whether it is being assigned to a vehicle or supplied on a DVLA certificate.
A V750 Certificate of Entitlement is used for eligible registrations that have not previously been assigned to a vehicle, while a V778 Retention Document is used when a registration has been removed from a vehicle and retained.
If the registration is assigned to your vehicle, the DVLA will issue an updated V5C logbook showing the new registration.
It’s important to keep any DVLA documentation relating to your registration safe.

The Transfer Process
Owning a registration number doesn’t automatically give you the right to display it on your chosen vehicle. The registration must first be legally assigned to the vehicle through the DVLA.
The transferring a registration process involves providing the necessary vehicle and registration details, and your vehicle must be eligible to receive the registration.
For example, if you own a 2009 car, you can’t use a registration released after 2009 if doing so would make the vehicle appear newer than it is. You can, however, assign an older registration to a newer eligible vehicle.
Incorrect or incomplete information can delay the process. That’s why we offer a Transfer Management Service for our customers, helping to make sure the required information is handled correctly.
How Long Does the Process Take?
The overall timescale depends on the type of registration you’ve purchased and whether any additional documentation or seller action is required.
For registrations that are not private seller-backed, our standard processing timescale is 7-10 working days, although we aim to complete most orders within 3-5 working days.
Private seller registrations can take longer because Swiftreg first needs to obtain the registration entitlement from the seller before the order can progress.
Where a registration is eligible for online assignment, the DVLA stage itself can often be completed quickly once all of the required information is available.
Ordering Your Physical Plates
Remember, when you buy a private number plate, you’re purchasing the right to use the registration. If you want to display it on your vehicle, you’ll also need physical number plates displaying the registration.
When buying through Swiftreg, you can choose to order physical number plates alongside your registration.
Number plates intended for road use must meet the relevant legal requirements and should be supplied by a registered number plate supplier.
Informing Your Insurance Company
Another easy thing to forget when buying personalised number plates is telling your insurance company.
Once the registration has been successfully assigned to your vehicle, you should inform your insurer of the new registration so their records accurately reflect your vehicle.
Failing to update your insurer could cause problems with your policy or when making a claim, so it’s best to notify them as soon as the registration change has been completed.
If you use a separate breakdown cover provider, make sure you update the registration details with them too.
Updating Your Other Accounts
If you have any other accounts tied to your vehicle registration, don’t forget to update them too. This might include:
- ULEZ and Clean Air Zone accounts: If your vehicle is registered with an account used for congestion charges, ULEZ or another clean air zone, update it with your new registration.
- Parking permits: Many local council and private parking accounts use your vehicle registration, so update these to ensure the correct vehicle remains registered.
